  • Anomaloscope Test
  • Farnsworth-Munsell 100 Hue Test
  • City University Colour Vision Test
  • City University Colour Vision Online Test
  • Biyee SciTech Color Test
  • Neitz Color Blind Test

Note: I am a strong Protan, which means I have a red-green color blindness in which the red cones in my eyes do not detect enough red light and are too sensitive to greens, yellows, and oranges. It is from this perspective that I give my experience of each test.

Chrome Extension: Colour Enhancer

I test each one with and without the help of this chrome extension.

NOTE: It is important to keep in mind that the calibration of the display device is critical to the accuracy of any on-line color vision deficiency tests.

Ishihara Color Vision Test

History

This test for color blindness is probably the most well known, and it was the first color blind test can ever remember doing. It mainly focuses on the Red Green spectrum. Founded by Shinobu Ishihara a Japanese ophthalmologist, there are 38 plates in the official test, all with different sized and colored dots that form a circle. These dots comprise different colors and hues. It is a simple test whereby those sitting the eye exam say what they see or click the what they see. In front of you, there is a series of colored dots that make up a number or nothing. After you have finished the test, the examiner looks at the reference answers to determine which type of color deficiency you have.

My Experience:

The old school book version of this test was easy to beat. I remember my uncle on finding out that I was also color blind, told me that because I was studying engineering, I would probably have to do a color vision test for some of the jobs I would be interested in. He informed me that the test they use is universal and the sequence of numbers they want you to see can easily be remembered, to defeat the test. Not that I am encouraging anyone to do this, however there are a number of jobs where being color blind is seen as a hindrance, when in fact it is not.  (Graphics design, video editing, Police, Fire, etc)

The Test:

On performing the test online, it confirmed that I was a strong protan.

With Color Enhancer Chrome Extension Enabled:

With the Chrome extension Color Enhancer enabled, I was able to pass the test and scored as “normal vision”

Anomaloscope Test

anomaloscope-test

Anomaloscopes is a device where you, the observer, are asked to match two colored fields in color and brightness by manipulating one field. This test will determine if you can match the colors. The anomaloscope is a standard instrument for diagnosing color vision defects. If you have difficulty seeing red and green, then you will not be able to adjust the colors correctly. The results from this instrument permit accurate classification of all color deficiencies.

My Experience:

I have no prior experience with this kind of test.

The Test:

I found this test very difficult. The more I stared at the plates trying to confirm the colors matched, the more I doubted myself. However, some plates I found easy to match. It confirmed that I was a strong Protan.

With Color Enhancer Chrome Extension Enabled:

With the extension enabled, you still have to match the colors, so at first the extension gives no benefit. However, after matching the color, I found that toggling the extension on and off allowed me to see if the colors I thought I had matched were actually matching. In most cases, they were not.

Farnsworth-Munsell 100 Hue Test

hue-test
The Farnsworth-Munsell uses different colored blocks or pegs to identify color vision deficiency and color vision acuity. Arrange the blocks in color order, (i.e. going from lightest to darkest or red to purple). This test is often used for people that are employed in sectors that require highly accurate color vision, such as a graphic designer. The FM 100 Hue Test – has been used in industry and in various government applications for over 60 years.

My Experience:

This is a bizarre one for me. I am color blind, yet fascinated by color. One of the games I play on my phone is very similar in idea to the Farnsworth-Munsell hue test. Now surprisingly, I am the highest scoring member of my family, defeating every challenger, young and old, male or female, yet I am as Protan as they come.

Color Sense Master (Color Test) – Apps on Google Play

The Test:

This test is just like the game, sort the colors closest to each other. Unlike the Anomaloscope test, which has colors that can not be matched, colors designed to trick you, this test does not. And for whatever reason, I find it rather easy. I scored a perfect! Zero, perfect color vision. Which we know I have not.

With Color Enhancer Chrome Extension Enabled:

I found I was still able to correctly align the colors.

City University Colour Vision Test 1

A test devised to detect all color vision deficiencies. This test displays normal protan, deutan and tritan colours, differentiation is stronger in the red/green.

My Experience:

This was the second professional test I ever encountered. I found it difficult to do, and the results confirmed my strong Protan.

The Test:

This is a professional test, and this video walks you through it.

This is not an online test.

City University Colour Vision Online Test

city-university-colour-vision-online-test
A test devised to detect all color vision deficiencies. Simply watch the 90 second video and note down the times when the square disappears, if it disappears that indicates you have a color deficiency.

My Experience:

I came across this test years ago and found it fascinating. Watching it with my wife and me having the square disappear and for her being able to see it the whole time. Fascinating.

The Test:

“The movie lasts for 90 seconds and all you need to do is play it and remember if the “coloured” square disappeared at any time during the movie. The absence of the moving square may only last for 2 to 3 seconds, before you see it reappearing in a different colour. This temporary disappearance of the pattern is what you have to watch for in the test. When this happens, you may like to confirm this with your optometrist, who will be able to diagnose the type and severity of your colour deficiency loss.” From https://researchcentres.city.ac.uk/applied-vision/a-new-web-based-colour-vision-test

With Color Enhancer Chrome Extension Enabled:

The squares still disappeared, but on the whole it was easier to track the square moving.

Biyee SciTech Color Test

biyee-color-test
“Biyee color vision deficiency tests are based on research work originally carried out in the early 1990s at Cornell University. They were brought on-line in 2000. It went through different versions following the change of technical conditions for rich Internet applications (RIA). The on-line versions started as Java applets, migrated to Silverlight apps, then a WebAssembly app containing all tests currently.

Biyee color vision deficiency tests distinguish them from other digital color vision deficiency tests by creating unlimited random test patterns dynamically strictly following the principles of color vision deficiencies. Therefore, they are the most accurate for a given display device, far superior to those with a finite number of test images, especially those scanned images vulnerable to a variety of factors detrimental to the test accuracy.  ” From – https://www.biyee.net/color-science/color-vision-test/

My Experience:

I have no prior experience with this kind of test.

The Test:

Simple to do and easy to understand and can test for Protanopia, Deuteranopia and Tritanopia.

With Color Enhancer Chrome Extension Enabled:

With the extension enabled, I passed the protanopia test.

Neitz Color Blind Test

neitz-color-test

“Like conventional color vision tests, the Neitz asks individuals to identify colored shapes within grey dot patterns. Unlike these tests, however, it does not require expensive color plates that eventually fade and need to be replaced. Requiring no special training, the test is quite easy to administer.

Elementary school teachers can distribute, administer, and collect the test, in their classrooms, in less than 5 minutes. This means you can screen an entire student body without disrupting lessons or taking a single child out of class. Of course, the same administrative efficiency applies in business and government settings as well.

Reliable, economical, and easy to administer on a large scale, the Neitz Test of Color Vision permits routine screening in schools, industry, public safety agencies, and the military-thereby reducing the likelihood of accident or educational disadvantage due to poor color vision.” http://www.neitzvision.com/neitz-test/

My Experience:

I have no experience with this test, however I like the fact that is cheap and easy to administer and believe that every school should employ this to catch color blindness early.

The Test:

The Neitz asks individuals to identify colored shapes within grey dot patterns.

With Color Enhancer Chrome Extension Enabled:

It is a physical test.
